Life, the Universe, and Everything

Where does our essence of morality come from? Our natural inclination
to know that certain things are bad while others are good, do we
gradually come to learn "values" or are we naturally gifted with a
inate ability to decipher between right and wrong OR is there no set
moral basis, is morality circumstantial? if so how and what steps do
you go by to figure out which circumstances would change the commonly
held view? Basically why do people believe certain things are wrong
and right and how do we know who is correct?

morality is learned. Thats why when you're growing up your parents yell "don't do that, it's bad".

I believe that morality is circumstantional. i have to say this because before i came to WVU all my friends and family had pretty much the same views as me on most topics. after coming here and making tons of friends who disagreed i at first thought, how could they think that?! but then i realized the reason i think what i do is because thats what my parents taught me. since not all parents think exactly the same about how to raise a child and what is right or wrong in the world, different kids get a different group of rights and wrongs. at the same time, there are probably some issues that no matter how you are raised, its just human nature to understand that it is wrong, in other words, all parents teach some things the same. for example, everyone knows stealing is wrong, but its whether you have the ability to do stop yourself from doing it or not, thats where the morality steps in.

Have you ever been in a situation and you know that it is wrong, even if no one ever told you? It is just a gut feeling. I think morality comes from a natural instinct which can be suppressed by enviromental influences. In some societies things Americans would view as very immoral are not considered immmoral, so I also think that certain morals are taught. There is also the question of what is the definition of "bad" and "good".Since coming to college I have learned they are very subjective words.

Morality is an enate gift from God that we are born with. For example, children who dont know whats wrong and right hide when they take things or hit others because its enate to know its wrong. Its been that way since Eden where we acquired conscience. The view that it is conditional or circumstancial is only because our world has polluted our population so much that people don't want to admit whats right anymore. AND NO MY PARENTS DIDNT TEACH ME THIS (I was raised in a 100% secular community and have my own brain)... so there goes that theory of where it comes from
