Hasn't Helped Us At All!

I cannot wait until Gov. Manchin is out of office. I didnt like the idea of him getting into office in the first place but at the time no one really knew of any opposing candidates. I used to say he has done nothing since he has been in office but the more I think about it the more I realize he really has. The catch is it has all upset the residents of the state. The first strike was making our state slogan "Open for Business." Are we hookers?! That probably did not help the view of the state. Finally he changed it back to Wild and Wonderful but only after millions of state resident complaints and the state legislation still had to do it themselves. And then he decided that he was going to make the Promise scholarship only if the students who used it stayed in the state for two years after graduating college. And he was going to chase down all those students who had already used it and left. That made me personally mad. Yes, I do not plan on leaving the state but many people do. There is nothing here. He has run everyone out rather than pull them in. I'm not asking for big cities because the country side is what I love about the state, but if you want people to stay in the state you need to be able to supply them with jobs. And to do that you have to give the businesses a reason to come here which obviously he is failing at. Hello!...Manchin's own daughter works for an out of state corporation. Milan Puskar does help the university but his corporation headquarters is in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Now I read that he is repremanding West Virginia businesses for where they hold their business meetings. What does that matter?! If the company has a business meeting but cannot find a suitable place in the state to hold it at the time that they want it, they should not be told to change the date of their meeting just to stay in the state. That's a load of crap. That kind of nonsense is what runs and keeps businesses out of West Virginia. Joe Manchin has done nothing but hurt us and now that I am able to vote I am pleased to know that I can be a part of hopefully getting him out of office. Hopefully in November we will be saying goodbye to Joe as well as George.-FeFie Burma

I know I don't live here in West Virginia but I know that everytime I seem to open a paper there is an article complaining about the way he governs. He just doesn't seem to make a lot of people happy and like him. Maybe he just needs to reevaluate himself and realize it's time for someone else to try and solve the problems he obviously can't solve.

While politics are a rather "explosive" subject matter, I can say that my family history with the Manchin Family has spanned back over 25 years. Every November we all go hunting on either Gov. Manchin's farm in Farmington, or our own farm in Grantown, staying at the Manchin's home for the week. I have attended his Christmas festivities and dinners at the Govenor's Mansion in Charleston, speak and meet with his son regularly, and he makes appearances at some of our larger "family" parties. With that being said, I can see through the "cloud" that seems to surround him as a politician.

While some may be angered he wishes to take away the promise scholarship, the original Intent of such a bill was to help retain scholars in the state of West Virginia. The unforseen concequences of the original bill had to be rectified, to either keep WVU grads in West Virginia, or acknowledge the fact that West Virginia's economy is a more industrial/extraction economy than a professional one.

Lets face it, West Virginia is the largest producer of coal on this this side of the Mississippi, and #2 in the nation to Wyoming, however the coal deposits in West Virginia are the most desirable and valuable. To say that he has not helped the state is foolish, although he may not have helped the so called "professional" sector. Manchin has made huge advances in enforcing safety regulations in West Virignia's mines, and is strongly supported by the UMWA. (United Mine Workers of America) In addition to helping West Virginia's number one export Manchin has also helped West Virginia turn "greener" with the development of Gob fueled energy. The unsightly and toxic by products left behind from past generations of mining (Gob: it is the slate and undesirable coal remains) are recycled in a process using coal dust to burn the remaining Surplus of waste coal, to 1) produce energy and 2) reclaim unsightly mine refuge sites.

Gov. Manchin is a very successful businessman that has made great strives in the advancement of West Virginia's active economy. While he may not be able to help the "professional" aspect of West Virginia's economy, he has taken what is alive in the state and helped that economy excel. You can't build something out of nothing, and this seems to be what you are expecting him to do.

Now, although Manchin is a Democrat, he is what I would consider conservative. In the last presidential election West Virginia voted Republican, and I can nearly guarantee if Manchin was a Liberal candidate, he would have struggled to be elected into office, as West Virginia is largely based off traditional values. While Manchin has upheld these conservative values, he was able to make strives in the enviornmental issues the state has to face due to the ravaging techniques used by the Mining Industry in the past, as well as help the labor unions, to create a better workplace for the average working person. Yes, I am aware that West Virginia's biggest employer is wal-mart, which is also a NON-Union company, if this group of West Virginia's employee's is treated unfairly, it is due to their choice of being employed by a Non-Union company.

I feel the need to add, that I know all of this information, and I am not even from the state of West Virginia. Perhaps better awareness of the state that West Virginian's call their "home" is what is needed this November. Also, "Open to Business" has applied as I have chosen to come INTO the state to attend school, and plan to live within the state after graduation.

Joe Manchin is not a bad person...he is just a bad governor. Im not even saying he does it intentionally. But West Virginia needs a visionary not just someone who wants to use our coal deposits. I mean I am sorry but I personally do not want to work in a coal mine. My friend has an architecture degree(he lives in Weirton, WV) and he WANTS to stay in the state but guess what?? There is no work for this very competitive and very high paying job. And for you to say we cannot change our state from dirty industry into a more service and profession based economy then obviously you havnt noticed what Pittsburgh did in 20 years changing from a industrial economy into a highly diverse economy. And so far Joe Manchin has done very little to help business that helps make people move, we need jobs that people will move too. And these jobs are no coal jobs. I hope that this November we have a better choice. Oh an I agree with Manchin on the promise but he needs to do drastically more if our state is ever going to come out of this 30 year slump. I am a proud citizen of West Virginia and my hometown used to be the epitomy of economic success but our city ran the mill dry, our state ran the mill dry, and since everyone else was messing with them the chair members decided to run the mill dry... and through bad economic policies this place now only employs 900 people instead of the former 10,000. WE NEED A CHANGE IN OUR ECONOMIC POLICY AND THE LAWS THAT GOVERN THEM!
