With the upcoming 1 year aniversity of the Virginia Tech shooting, I was begining to think are we really as safe as we think we are. I began to think about what kind of things have been done at WVU to ensure that the students here are really safe. Sure we have to check people in after nine and we lock all of the side entrances but what is going to happen in case of an emergency. After the Virginia Tech incident and most recently in my home town at VCU, I believe that every college and university has to re-evaluate their emergency action plan because now we know it is possible that we might be faced with same ordeal. I just want some reassurance that we are really safe here at school and if not what kind of precautions are the university, the university police, and the students of WVU taking to keep Morgantown a safe place to be.

I sleep better at night knowing I am not staying at an apartment or dorm on the VCU campus, but I dont think WVU is all that safe.
The checking people into the dorm at a certain time is ridiculous. People set off the door alarms all the time and never get caught letting people into the dorms. There have been times when people not from my dorm have just walked right in without having to swipe their ID.Plus there have been times when people walk in during the day and do not leave until the next day going unnoticed by the majority of people.I agree that WVU should be proactive so that our false sense of safety is not shattered in a tragic instant.
I think it is safe to say that what happened at Virginia Tech last year was very tragic. I would hate to see something like that happen here at WVU. And when I think about it, yeah it worries me. But I do feel as though WVU is a pretty safe place. Maybe it is because I feel like..."it will never happen to me, not here, not us." Which I guess is not really a good way to look at it, because it can happen at anytime, anywhere, to anyone. I guess compared to other campuses around the nation our campus is not as safe. A friend of mine who goes to a school in New York, called SUNY Plattsburgh, can not get into his dorm unless he swipes his card. His card is what unlocks the main door to the dorm. I guess the dorms on our campus could look into doing something like that. I like going to WVU, and for the most part I do feel pretty safe...but we do need to be cautious.

Like there are a lot of times when i think about something terrible happening to WVU. I always think about situations and worry all the time about something happening. I always think i am being ridiculous but then i tell it to other people and they are thinking the same thing as me. It is true about the whole situation with the dorms, anybody can walk right in in the daytime and stay until they want almost. I always pray and hope that everything will be ok and everyone will be fine. But there is really know way around it and that is whats scary.
I agree that some of the rules are easy to get around here and I know that new precautions need to be thought up. As far as safety I feel that the police around Morgantown are definitly more active and alert then other places. I know there is always something more that we can do to make things safer but sometimes the unknown just can't be predicted. I wonder to if where I am is safe but no one would have any privacy at all if the security became even tighter in the dorms. There will always be a way around things and that is scary just in itself.
unfortunately, i dont think anyone is safe anywhere really. every campus has the few people who get angry easily and think about starting a campus shooting. i think schools are mostly trying to avoid getting those people or trying to change them, but they are going to be there no matter what. instead of trying to say it couldnt happen to us and avoiding it, we should try to be as prepared as possible...ready for it at any time. i find the door alarms funny as well, because for some reason if someones going to rob a dorm they could do it anytime during the day..just walk right in and not get noticed...i know that most people that want to do bad things do it at night when the doors are locked, but at the same time if you go here you would know to just do something during the day when people are out and dorm doors are propped open. i think there are a lot more things wvu could be doing to help prevent and be prepared for this sort of issue.
You guys are being rediculous. There is absolutly no reason to give up any of our civil rights because we are scared of some nut job.If you guys want to be safe we need to quit treating everyone like terrorists and maybe people should treat each other with a bit of dignity and respect then people wouldnt think about gunnin each other down all the time. I feel absolutly safe here at WVU. sometimes stuff just happens. it doesnt mean we all have to hide in our own little holes.
i'd like to think that we're pretty safe here in morgantown, but you never know. sometimes when i sit in one of my classes that is really big i wonder what would happen if someone came in the auditorium and did something horrible. i'd like to think that maybe some of the things that have happened at the other schools can help prevent that from happening here. i think that the school is pretty safe for what we have. you can only do so much with the money/resources you have and i think our school is improving (the text msg alert system). everyone just needs to be cautious and know what to do just incase that situation would ever occur.

I think about the VT shooting sometimes too. Our classrooms and buildings are open and available just like the ones at VT were. It is a little difficult to do anything about that though because teachers cannot just lock the classroom doors. Kids come late to class all the time. I agree that dorms are very protected, but anything can happen. One slip up and you never know.

I think WVU is pretty safe, i mean if someone wants to do something like the Virginia Tech shooting then they will find a way. But WVU does have a lot of strict rules, which I don't always agree on, but in the end they are just trying to protect us. WVU could do some things to improve on, but I think they are trying to work on it. Over all I feel pretty safe at WVU and hope to feel that way as long as I'm going to school here.
I happen to think that WVU is one of the safer campus's that I have been on. While visiting Penn State University with a friend all you had to have to get into the dorm was an id of someone who lived there. I walked right in, there was no one there surpervising or checking people in. Also, WVU has the emergency alert system with the phones to let people know that when something bad is happening. Bad things can happen anywhere and we cannot let the fact that something bad might happen run our lives.
I feel pretty safe here, but I know there is still a chance of an incident to happen at anytime. Being here for only a year has helped me learn the campus better and know how people are like. Everybody seems nice but sometimes those "nice" people could be the bad ones. You just never know anymore and that is one thing that worries me about anywhere I go or am at.
Just like pickle, I had thought the same about the safiness of WVU. I really don't think we are safe in WVU. If liquor can be smuggled into the dorms so will be guns. I think if they installed metal-detectors on every building in WVU could really help. like most high schools in new york ....and so far less shooting has occured.
It is a horrible thing that happened at Virginia Tech, but everyone cannot let that run their lives. Anywhere you go there will always be the random idiots taht will think like that shooter did. No matter what college you go to you run the risk of having something like that happen every time you step out the door. Bad things happen, and it's horrible when they do, but you need to just live life and try to be as safe as possible. -Nate A
I do not believe that any university can be that safe. It is hard to defend something that is totally unexpected. You just have to keep your eyes and ears open.
