But Brittney Is, Like, Soooo Important!

Do you ever wonder why our generation is so fascinated by those in the
media? Especially people like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and
Brittany Spears. You can`t flip through the channels and not see
their faces. Serious news people are even talking about them, and
sounding concerned about what's going on in their lives. I think that
it is sad and pathetic how much people focus and put their time into
them. People everyday are drinking, doing drugs, and getting in
trouble with the law. Why is it everyone cares when they do those
things, they are real peopole. Is it just me or do other people think
their are a lot more important things going on in this world?

When Britney shaved her hair and the media went nuts, I thought that was the stupidest thing I've seen on the news in a loooong time.

On the other hand, if she's always under the spotlight, what other choice does she have to ask for help?

But by this point, every time I hear "Lindsey Lohan" or some other celeb's name in the news, my ears turn themselves off. I'm sure people are still dying in Darfur, people are still starving, and much more important things are going on.

I actually think the media attention is some of the reasons behind their unstable mentality. But it is common human interest that keeps the public so fascinated by the lives of the rich and famous. I do think that there are more important things in the world that they could be showing... but I do think that some people learn a little from the mistakes of the celebs. Some could use Lindsay Lohan as an example of why drinking is bad. They could use Britney Spears as an example for what not to do in a custody and divorce case.

We are fascinated by these people because they show us that you can be famous with little or no talent. They encourage our culture's fascination with spoiled little rich girls who do nothing but shop, party, and come up with lame ass catch phrases like "that's hot." They make life look simple and provide an easy example for people to imitate; they give other shallow, attention seeking bimbos hope and reinforce childish and unhealthy behavior. In my opinion, much of young America is looking for any reason or excuse to behave hedonistically and these girls make it look cool. It seems that these girls send a message saying, "I am famous, therefore anything and everything I do will not only be considered glamorous, but start a trend." The sad part is that they are right.
I believe that people realize that their lives are mundane and they will never achieve any of the ideals of this culture of megalomaniacs. They tie themselves in with these people on some level and live vicariously through them by keeping up with what is going on their lives. It is much easier to buy into this fad than search for personal contentment in other more fitting areas; going main stream is the path of least resistance and people are inherently lazy.
My favorite Paris Hilton quote, which I only know by seeing it on countless Facebook profiles is something along the lines of, “all you have to do in life is have fun with your friends, party, and look twice as hot as the bitch standing next to you.” This, among countless other clichés that confuse being free spirited and spontaneous with acting like an impulsive, unrealistic jack-ass, makes me chuckle because as true as this may be for Ms. Paris, it doesn’t apply to the average woman, attractive or not. If that’s all you do you are most likely to end up jobless, penniless, lacking any real friends, with stained reputation restricting you from any romantic partner of real substance (unless by some strange chance you find someone with an extreme savior complex), and an increasing feeling of emptiness and lack of purpose. With the exception of being penniless, I assume that these “celebrities” encounter these problems as well. Perhaps this is why they continue this vicious cycle of self-destruction. Happy people don’t need to go out every night and abuse substances. Then again, happiness takes some work, and it’s easier to mourn your life than change it for the better.

I understand where you are coming from thinking that there is more to life then learning about famous people's lives on tv. When you think about it, it does seem dumb to be worrying about everyone elses lives instead of just yours. However, some people are just interested in gossip in today's world. I for one always enjoys buying new magazines and reading all the latest gossip about what goes on with our celebritites today. It is just something that people like to do. Some people like reading history about the latest elections and candidates. Some people like to read comics to start their day off with some humor. Also, some people like reading magazines about famous people. We idolize them for being able to sing, dance, and write their own music. Everybody usally looks up to someone, for some people they like to look up to celebrities. That is why even though some people think it is stupid to read all the latest gossip, that is only an opinion and some other people highly enjoy learning about the famous people on the tv.
