Do Students Need Cars Anyway?

Piggy-backing off of the post just under this one, it seems to me that one way to solve the parking problem is to leave your cars at home. If you think about the amount of money you'd probably pay to park, the hassle of finding a spot, digging your car out from the snow and ice during winter time, the time you waste driving when sometimes walking is just as fast...why bring it in the first place? Sure, Morgantown is somewhat spread out and not everything is within walking distance. But do you really need your car--or can you get by without it?

I agree with the hassle from bringing a car as a freshman. But if I had my car here I can get anrund to the movies and mall much easier. Taking the bus is was too long and I've seen some strange people on it. Also I like the option that I can go home if it was a emergency or anything.

I don't have a car on campus, and usually I get around just fine without one. I won't be bringing a car here unless I move off-campus, because, even though taking the bus can sometimes be a hassle, having a car while one is living in a dorm is sort of superfluous. However, I have to admit that I was pretty thankful that a few of my friends have cars on campus whenever I got my kidney stone and had to go to the hospital and then to CVS. I couldn't have walked or ridden a bus for 2 hours just to get to CVS to get the prescriptions I so desperately needed while I was in that condition.

For the first semester, I didn't have my car with me. I had to walk just like most people to catch the prt or the bus. For the second semester I got a job off campus, so I needed a car to get to and from the job. Having a car was way more easier getting around than having to walk to certain spots to get were I needed to be. However, parking is a serious issue in Morgantown. I have gotten multiple ticket for only being a few minutes late returning to my car. Fairmont State offer free parking to their student, so why can't WVU buy out a parking garage and spare the hassle. I feel like with all the money they make off parking tickets they would be able to better the faulty transportation systems they expect us to use. Until they do that students are going to continue to drive no matter what expense they have to pay.

I have been here for almost a full semester. I live at towers and I have not found getting around inconvenient at all. Every morning I go downtown for classes and then back and forth throughout the day with barely any hassle. I do have to deal with the PRT breaking down on occasion but for me it has only made me late to class one time (and that was English class). Bus' are a good way to get downtown too. My friend takes the bus downtown in the morning and he likes it. I have never tried it; I stay strong with the PRT. I think having a car would be even more of an inconvenience just with having to pay for a spot as well as always having to find parking spaces downtown or wherever you go. I don't know how hard it is getting spaces, I'm just saying. Ill most likely end up getting a car but not my freshman year. Ill get one when I move off campus or something. One reason why I do wish I had a car was so I can just go home when I'm done with finals. Ill have 4 days to kill after my last final before I can go home because of the bus that's taking me home :(

I think that having a car would be a huge help. This way when I am homesick I could go home and see my family and friends. Also, the bus takes forever. I walk everywhere, which is good exercise, but a hassle. I am hoping to be able to bring my car second semester!!

I am a Commuter Student, living at home. So It is a necessity for me to have my car, to get back and forth from my house to the campus. I agree with blogger CWC, about how parking is an issue in Morgantown. I feel that WVU should definately provide more parking for students. I usually rely on the coliseum's parking lot. Once I have found a parking spot, I use the PRT and walk from class to class throughout the rest of the day. Like I said before, I only need my car to get from my house to the campus. The public transpartation that is provided to all students is a great way to get around once you're on campus.
